Music Class Description-5th Grade

MUSIC
1st TRIMESTER
 
Students analyze the use of music elements in aural examples from various genres and cultures
Students identify vocal and intrumental ensembles
 
Students sing a varied repertoire of music by themselves and with others
Students learn thematic songs during the months of October(Armenian Cultural Month, Halloweeen), November(Thanksgiving), December(Christmas)
 
Students participate freely in singing and listening to Armenian traditional, patriotic, folk and contemporary songs and songs of other cultures

Students analyze the role of music in past and present cultures throughtout the world noting cultural diversity as it relates to music, musicians, and composers
Students describe the social functions of a variety of musical forms from various cultures, including their own
Students describe the influence of various cultures and historical events
on music
Students describe the influences of various cultures on the music of United States
Students identify and analyze differences in tempo and dynamics in contrasting music selections.

MUSIC
2nd TRIMESTER

Students continue to sing age appropriate songs from memory in a developmentally appropriate range, work on their tone quality, posture, diction and breathing; continue to build confidence in solo singing

Students recognize style differences determined by rhythm, melody, tone color, dynamics
Students identify recurring rhythm patterns, identify like and unlike phrases; repetition and contrast

Students continually learn new music terminology and their knowledge on musical instruments and musical notation is reinforced

Students continue to sing Armenian, American (traditional, classical, patriotic, folk and contemporary) songs and songs of other cultures; compare historical and cultural styles

Students are continually introduced to composeres from different musical periods and listen to their music
Students learn thematic songs for the months of January and February (winter, Valentine's Vartanantz, Paregentan, Presidents' Day)

MUSIC
3rd TRIMESTER

Students continue to sing age appropirate songs from memory with proper enunciation, phrasing, breath control and pitch; students develop range and intonation

Students listen to and compare music of diverse cultures and styles from various periods of history

Students recognize the tone colors of various instrumental ensembles; recognize orchstra, band, electronic, folk and Armenian instruments (Kamancha, Kanon, Oot, Saz, Tar, Doudouk, Zourna, Dhol, Dap)

Students recognize the use and effect of different tempos and dynamics; understand relationships of words to form

Students continue to work on musical notation
Students are introduced to different forms of music (Opera, Ballet)

Students continue to sing Armenian, America (traditional, classical, patriotic, folk and contemporary) songs and songs of other cultures

Students are introduced to composers from different musical periods and listen to their music
Students are introduced to Armenian composers and their music

Students learn thematic songs for the months of March and April (spring, Easter, AGBU Founder's Day Genocide), May and June(Mother's Day, Graduation)
