Music Class Description-1st Grade

MUSIC
1st TRIMESTER
 
Students perform simple patterns of rhythm and pitch, using beat and rest
Students identiy common instruments visually and aurally
 
Students sing with accuracy in a developmentally appropriate range
Students sing age-appropriate songs from memory
 
Students participate freely in singing and listening to American and Armenian traditioanl, patriotic, folk and contermporary songs; and songs of many different cultures

Students sing and play simple singing games
Students use developmentally appropriate movements in responding to music
 
Students learn thematic songs during the months of October(Armenian Cultural month, Halloween), November(Thanksgiving), and December (Christmas).

2nd TRIMESTER

Students sing age appropriate songs from memory
Students identify the melodic movements in songs by leaps and repetition

Students continue to sing Armenian, American(traditional, classical, patriotic, folk and contemporary) songs and songs of other cultures
Solo singing is encouraged

Students continue to learn about different instrument families and identify their sounds
Students continue to play different rhythmic patterns with rhythmic instruments

Students listen to all different styles of music and are introduced to famous composers and their music
Students learn thematic songs for the months of January and February(winter, Valentin'es, Vartanantz, Paregentan, Presidents' Day)

3rd TRIMESTER

Students continue to sing age appropriate songs from memory
Students identify melodic patterns, melodic repetition and melodic rhythm
Students identify phrases,phrase endings and repeated phrases

Students are introduced to tempo, dynamics(terminology)
Students continue to learn about different instruments and their sounds
Students are introduced to musical notation (treble clef notes)

Students are introduced to Armenian composers and their music
Students learn thematic songs for the months of March, April (spring, AGBU Founder's Day, Easter), May and June (Mother's Day,Father's Day, Summer)
