Music Class Description--2nd Grade

MUSIC
1st TRIMESTER
 
Students perform simple rhythmic patterns,
Students identify ascending/descending melody and even/uneven rhythm patterns in selected pieces of music
Students identify visually simple musical forms-verse/refrain
Students identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass and percussion instruments
 
Students sing with accuracy in a developmentally appropriate range
Students sing age-appropriate songs from memory
 
Students participate freely in singing and listening to American and Armenian traditional, patriotic, folk and contemporary music, as well as music of allother cultures
Students identify the uses of specific music in daily or special events
 
Students create developmentally appropriate movements to express pitch, tempo, form and dynamics in music
Students identify how musical elements communicate ideas or moods
Students are introduces to Armenian composers and their music (in the month of October-Armenian Cultural month)
Students learn thematic songs during the months of October(Armenian Cultural month, Halloween), November(Thanksgiving), December(Christmas)

2nd TRIMESTER

Students continue to sing age appropriate songs from memory
Students identify the melodic movements in songs by narrow and wide leaps, and repetition

Students continue to sing Armenian, American (traditional, classical, patriotic,folk and contemporary) songs and songs of other cultures
Students work on building confidence in solo singing, tone, quality, posture, diction, and breathing

Students identify rhythmic elements of meter in 2,3, and 4 and create rhythmis examples while playing the rhythmic instruments
Students' musical terminology is reinforced (tempo, dynamics)

Students continue to listen to different styles of music and identify the instruments visually and aurally

Students continue to work on musical notation with the use of Smart Board

Students learn thematic songs for the months of January and February (winter, Valentine's, Vartanantz, Paregentan, Presidents' Day)

3rd TRIMESTER

Students continue to sing age appropriate songs from memory while working on their tone quality, posture, diction and breathing;continue to build confidence in solo singing

Students continue to sing Armenian, American (traditional, classical, patriotic, folk and contemporary) songs and songs of other cultures

Students identify different rhythmic patterns in their songs and recreate them when playing the rhythmic instruments

Students are continually introduced to famous composers and their music  biographies, Brain Pop, videos)
Students continue to work on musical notation and their musical terminology is reinforced

Students learn thematic songs for the months of March, April (spring, AGBU Founder's Day, Easter), May and June (Mother's Day, Father's Day, summer)
